History
The suburb of Waverton takes its name from "Waverton House" built by Joseph Purser in 1845 on land purchased from Alexander Berry. The whole of Waverton was part of the large Wollstonecraft land grant (524 acres). Edward Wollstonecraft and Alexander Berry were business partners who settled on this side of the harbour and built Crows Nest Cottage - from which the suburb of Crows Nest takes its name.

Waverton is just a few minutes from North Sydney, where schools including Wenona Girls’ School, Shore, Monte Sant Angelo, North Sydney Girls’ High and North Sydney Boys’ High.

Landmarks
Waverton abounds in history and to this day features many significant landmarks including: Waverton Station, which was restored by State Rail and reopened in 1993, and is classified by the National Trust; the Uniting Church Hall, which was purchased by the Methodist Church in c1919; the foreshore areas of Balls Head and Berry Island which feature Aboriginal rock engravings; HMAS Waterhen, which was established in Waverton in the early 1960s; Balls Head Coal Loader, constructed on the western edge of the Balls Head peninsula in 1917 to act as a steamship bunkering station; the BP Site, the remains of which are listed as having 'high' heritage significance; and the Will Ashton Lookout, named in honour of well-known artist and Waverton resident, Sir John William Ashton.
Shopping
The suburb has a range of neighbourhood shops, including butcher, grocer, newsagent, video store, liquor store and nursery. It is also just a few minutes’ drive to North Sydney, which boasts some large shopping centres including Greenwood Plaza, which features a huge selection of specialty food and fashion stores.
Sports, Recreation & Fitness
Waverton is home to the magnificent Balls Head Reserve, which attracts picnickers, bushwalkers and people just wanting to gaze on the harbour and city views. Waverton Park is also a popular recreational spot, and features a childrens’ playground and playing fields. There is also the Waverton Bowling Club.
Distance From CBD & Transportation
Around 6km from the city centre, Waverton is well serviced by trains heading to the city and north shore.
