History
Captain Arthur Phillip, shortly after he steered the First Fleet into Sydney Harbour, named Manly, on the northern side of the Harbour, after the “confidence and manly behaviour” of the local Aborigines. If you take a look at the beach these days, you won’t be surprised to see the locals are still somewhat similar. Manly epitomises Australia’s beach culture.
You’ll find it perfectly wedged between the Harbour, North Head and the Pacific Ocean. It’s world famous for its ferry ride from the city, (dating back to 1855), bush reserves with spectacular views, and indolent lifestyle.
Real Estate & Design
Manly offers a blend of architectural styles that represent period and purpose. Contemporary homes are built to take full advantage of the sublime views, there are Federation mansion of substance, and lovingly restored semis. The early 1920’s saw the arrival of substantial apartment buildings, with the 60’s and 70’s seeing development of multi story apartments along the beachfront.
Shopping tomorrow
The Corso and its intersecting streets are perfect for beachside retail therapy, and day to day needs. Department stores are only a short drive away at Warringah Mall, and Manly Wharf is great for a touristy browse whilst waiting for the ferry.
Sports & Fitness
Its unlikely that there is a finer pastime than a walk or run along Manly beach. But those in need of alternatives might try 18 holes at the Manly Golf Course, or head down to District Park for a little football, cricket or tennis.
Distance from the CBD & Transportation
Manly is 13.5km north east of the CBD. The drive to the city is via the Harbour bridge or tunnel, and there are plenty of buses, but most residents grab the ferry and relax on the journey.
