History
Like its namesake suburb of Gymea, Gymea Bay is named after the Aboriginal word for the area’s hardy yet beautiful giant native lily. The prestigious bay area encompasses the southern most tip of Gymea right down to the shoreline looking directly over the North West Arm and Gymea Bay, offering panoramic views across the Royal National Park directly opposite.
The first residential subdivision was made in 1917. It stayed a secluded suburb of tucked away waterside homes until an intensive phase of development kick started in the 1950s.
Gymea Bay baths are a real highlight, consisting of a small sandy beach, a 50 x 30 metre enclosed tidal swimming pool and two recreation reserves. There is a second small beach adjoining Marina Reserve inside the North West Arm.
A scenic track runs through tranquil Coonong Creek and its lush surrounding bushland, which cuts directly through the suburb.
Shopping
There is a post office and a handful of shops in Gymea Bay. More extensive shopping options can be found in the adjoining suburbs of Gymea and at Westfield in Miranda.
