Terrigal is a seaside village found in the geographical heart of the Central Coast. The name Terrigal originates from the aboriginal word ‘Tarriga’ meaning ‘place of birds’ – a testament to its lush coastal surrounds and marshland. Terrigal is one of the most popular areas for holiday houses and accommodation on the Central Coast because of its close proximity to Sydney, stunning weather and friendly surf culture.
Historically, the area’s economic rise came with a boom in tourism in the late 19th century, which focused on the area’s culture of health and leisure. Today, this culture still holds true, with beautiful bodies of water, four kilometres of unbroken beach and The Skillion – an impressive steep cliff face overlooking the ocean and Terrigal’s most prominent natural feature.
The area’s educational services offer a broad academic curriculum and a positive community profile with Terrigal Primary School and Terrigal High School – one of the largest co-education and comprehensive schools on the Central Coast. Terrigal is also home to The Terrigal School for Children with Autism, one of the few schools of its kind in the greater area.
Terrigal features its to beachside shopping strip The Esplanade, offering an array of boutiques and general stores, and is a five-minute drive from the Central Coast shopping hotspot Erina Fair. But perhaps the most loved shopping venture in Terrigal is the Terrigal Gourmet food and Art Markets, held every second Saturday with a range of locally made jewellery, gifts, fresh produce and original artwork.
Recreationally, the Central Coast is famous for its surfing, swimming, boating, waterskiing and fishing culture, making the most of the area’s inland and ocean waterways. Terrigal Beach and Terrigal Surf Club are among the most popular hangouts along the Central Coast for both regular beach goers and advanced surfers.
