The fine art of marketing
Katrina Hampton sees herself as a bridge between artist and art lover. She’s also a self confessed control freak. With a background in marketing and an appreciation for fine art, Katrina embarked on a mission to bring quality art into the homes of everyday aficionados while at the same time giving Australian artists a portal to display their work. “Irealised there was a niche to market artists,” says Katrina. “Established artists often don’t have the time or the inclination to market themselves and it’s always more professional for someone else to market you.” Art2Muse is an online art gallery showcasing the works of 45 established Australian artists. Viewers can browse for artists they are interested in and request catalogues or an invitation to see the artworks and their creator in the flesh at the artist’s studio. The key to the success of Art2Muse is its affordability and convenience. “We can cater to art lovers who are time poor, who work 12 hour days or have young children and find it hard to get out,” she says adding that reduced overheads make it financially easier to acquire an original work of your very own. “It’s really hard for artists to break into the gallery scene. Commissions are intrusive and costly overheads make purchasing out of reach for many art lovers.” And it’s not just limited to paintings. You can find or commission works from sculptors, photographers, digital and mixed media artist. As for price, you can expect to pay anywhere from $500 to $5,000, depending on the piece. “I’m really selective about the artists take on,” says Katrina. “All of the artists represent have achieved a certain level of recognition or originality to their work.” Katrina launched Art2Muse five years ago. In addition to displaying art online, Katrina regularly holds exhibitions at various Sydney venues to bring artist and art lover together. Events are usually tailored around a specific artistic component. To fulfill its social responsibility, Art2Muse donates to charity and hosts fundraisers for worthy causes. Coming up in 2007 at Pyrmont’s MLC Gallery are several exhibitions featuring leading artists Susan L’Estrange, Lesley Ades, Brendon Mogg, Christine Maudy and Ghee Beom Kim. These exhibitions will showcase a range of works including painting, mixed media, abstract art and digital art. Check website for details. Running the company has its challenges and Katrina regularly uses the advice of consultants and specialists. She now plans to diversify and grow in new directions. Building a larger community affiliated with the arts will allow her to offer services such as art rental, art on consignment, artist representation and to launch Art2Muse internationally in 2008.
