The historical events that give Sans Souci its name are unusually dramatic. In 1853 a local merchant, Thomas Holt, acquired land around Rocky Point Road in order to build a stately home for his German wife. Holt erected a grand house and called it Sans Souci, after a much-admired palace built by the Prussian noble Frederick the Great.
