The name ‘Kogarah’ is an Aboriginal term meaning ‘rushes’ or ‘place of reeds’. The first two land grants in the area were to the Townson brothers in 1808 and James Chandler in 1822. Settlement was slow because there was no access across the Cooks River and Kogarah was filled with dense forest. A dam was constructed in 1840 at Cooks River and soon the first road was established, which is now Rocky Point Road, and a clearing of the land began.
