Waterloo took its name from the 1815 Battle of Waterloo in Belgium after originally being known as Illpah, the Aboriginal term for plenty of raspberries. In the 1820s the suburb was home to many industrial operations including the Fisher and Duncan Paper Mill and the Waterloo Flour Mills owned by William Hutchinson and Daniel Cooper.
